Quintessential Tips From a Pinterest Marketing Expert

Pinterest is a platform that can help bloggers and business owners generate more eyes on their business. Whether a brand is looking for blog traffic, product sales, email list growth and brand visibility, Pinterest can help.

While some topics are more popular than others on Pinterest, being a micro-niche or using the platform for a lesser-known industry could also be an advantage.

If you are new to using Pinterest, you'll want to keep reading, as I'll share the best Pinterest tips for business.

Understanding the Framework of a Pinterest Marketing Expert

I've been managing Pinterest accounts and creating Pinterest content strategies for the last seven years. The key for brands to stick with the platform and give it the chance it deserves is to create a sustainable content strategy that will allow you to rank up for various keywords on Pinterest while getting rewarded by the platform for being consistent.

Let's take a few steps back and talk about some important facts:

A photo of a home office desk with text overlay that states "Top tips from a Pinterest Marketing Expert."
  • Keywords on Pinterest represent a group of words used by someone on Pinterest to search for your products or services.

  • Keywords are important in your profile and throughout your account. They are also important in the process of pin creation, and we'll chat about that a little later.

  • The more consistent you are on the platform, the better you become at using relevant keywords, and the more Pinterest will show your content to those searching for your keywords.

  • Using keywords in your content doesn't automatically mean that your content will show up in searches.

Now, as a Pinterest marketing expert, there is a framework that I use when working with each client. This allows my clients to save time and manage their Pinterest accounts in as little as one or two hours per week.

It requires more work upfront to establish the framework, but once done, you can see your efforts pay off on the platform without giving away any more of the free time you don't have. Life is busy, and I know it!

The steps in my Pinterest content framework:

📌 Competitor analysis and research, including a SWOT analysis.

📌 Review the current stage of the account & analytics.

📌 Keyword research.

📌 Optimization for account & content health.

📌 Content inventory of existing content.

📌 Content plan for new content opportunities.

📌 Bank of micro-moments & positive authoritative trigger words.

📌 List of optimized, personalized CTAs.

📌 Template system.

📌 Tried & tested content hacks that have stood the test of time 👀.

📌 Scheduling & Automation .

Once the above steps are established in the initial stages of working together, my clients can walk away with being able to manage their Pinterest in one or two hours per week. There are unique elements that go into each step of the framework, and I always cover these in detail when on a discovery call.

Things a Pinterest Marketing Expert Would Never do on Pinterest

Pinterest is a platform that fosters creating a positive experience. What does this mean? People feel good about using Pinterest and about the content they find and the platform overall.

There are things I would never do on Pinterest, and I always pass this list along to my clients.

  • I would never send a pin by direct message to another Pinterest user. This happens a lot, and unless you are collaborating with someone, it's spammy.

  • I would never set a goal of growing to a million monthly views. Views are great, but your goal should align with your business objectives. Do you want traffic, email list growth, product sales, service inquiries, etc.?

  • I would never send a cold DM selling my services unless someone commented on one of my pins looking for more information.

  • I would never upload someone else's content and link it to my own website. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? I see this all the time.

  • I would also never take a screenshot of a quote graphic and upload it as my own. This also happens a lot. There's a reason the Pinterest save button exists.

Pinterest Tips That Have Stood The Test of Time

It's important to remember that the online platforms we use to market our business are businesses of their own. Pinterest, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, and the list goes on. All of these platforms are businesses.

It's no secret that sometimes, the general advice we will hear directly from the platforms may not be the best for your audience.

What does this mean?

Example: If you had a really engaged Facebook group community, and you were getting product sales, blog traffic, and new clients on a regular basis, and all of a sudden, a Facebook representative would say that what you are doing is not working, that wouldn't make sense would it?

The same applies to all platforms. As long as you follow the community and usage guidelines, listen to what your customers need to inform your strategy.

Here are some Pinterest tips that have stood the test of time:

  • Use medium and long-tailed keywords. The more specific, the better.

  • Use big text on the graphics to help your graphics stand out.

  • Create different variations of your graphics.

  • Create different variations of your keywords.

  • Use positive and authoritative trigger words in your titles and descriptions.

  • Using quality URLs.

  • Ensuring that the file name of your graphic includes a keyword.

  • Creating a few new relevant boards regularly.

While there are many more tips that you can apply to grow on the platform, this is a good place to start. Pinterest also values quality and optimization over quantity and fresh content.

Fresh content on Pinterest means you are using new images and videos to promote your content and also regularly use new URLs for new products, guides, blogs, etc.

How to Get Pinterest Followers

Having a large following is not required to have success on Pinterest; with that being said, you should still have a strategy in place to grow your audience. How to get Pinterest followers is a million-dollar question. I talk about this almost every day.

Here are a few tips to help you grow your followers on Pinterest

  • Use personalized CTAs. Example: Instead of using a call-to-action that simply says "save this pin." Use something like "Follow us & save this pin for more solo travel tips."

  • Follow & engage with other industry leaders. Engagement, such as reactions and comments on Pinterest, can contribute to your account visibility.

  • Take it outside the platform. Regularly encourage your email list subscribers to follow you on Pinterest. You can do the same on other platforms, such as inviting your audience on LinkedIn & Instagram to follow you on Pinterest.

  • Post regularly. Although this may seem like a minor detail, being active on the platform will contribute to your ongoing growth.

  • Host a contest. Simply review the community and advertising guidelines for contests on Pinterest, and you can get creative.

Sharing is caring, and if you enjoyed this blog post and want to share it on Pinterest, I would be forever grateful.
