Pinterest Keywords for Graphic Designers & How to Use Them Strategically
In this article:
Are you a graphic designer leaving money on the table by not using Pinterest to market your business? Let's change that.
If you're a graphic designer trying to get more eyes on your work, sell more digital products, or book more clients, you should consider Pinterest as the underused goldmine that's waiting to help you.
Pinterest is a visual discovery engine (search engine), and you need to know what your potential buyers and clients are searching for.
Once in a while, I like to curate lists of highly effective Pinterest keywords and share them on my blog. Below is a curated list of Pinterest keywords for graphic designers.
Under each section, you'll find ideas on when to use the keywords, what kind of content to create, and how to find untapped market gaps to help you come up with more top-of-funnel content ideas.
Graphic Design Keywords with High Search Volume
These keywords were found using the keyword tool in the Pinterest ads dashboard. Use them to name your boards, sprinkle into your pin descriptions, and write blog posts that drive traffic to your shop or portfolio.
These keywords include the search volume next to them i.e. 500k-1m, obviously do not include this in your copy when you share Pins on Pinterest.
Use these if you:
Sell Canva templates, logos, or mockups
Create blog content or YouTube tutorials
Create any form of educational or done-for-you templates
Keywords:
graphic design ideas 1m-2m
graphic design inspiration 1m-2m
graphic design branding 1m-2m
graphic design posters 500k-1m
graphic design art 500k-1m
graphic design logo 500k-1m
graphic design templates 500k-1m
graphic design typography 500k-1m
graphic design trends 500k-1m
graphic design t-shirts 500k-1m
graphic design t-shirt 500k-1m
Market gap tip
The keyword "graphic design t-shirts" doesn't bring up as many educational results as some of these other keywords when searched on Pinterest. If you don't currently offer t-shirt mockups or editable designs, this could be an opportunity.
You could consider creating some designs with commercial rights for apparel sellers or t-shirt shops. A lot of people sell print-on-demand products such as t-shirts and are always looking for designs with commercial rights.

Get the templateMedium Volume Keywords for Specific Offers
These keywords are more niche, and that's a good thing. They show us that there are more intentional searches from users looking for something a bit more specific.
Use these if you:
Offer niche digital products
Want to create really targeted blog posts or tutorials
Want to create content that positions you as an expert for any of these products.

Top-of-funnel content tip
Create a blog titled "15 Graphic Design Portfolio Ideas That Get You Noticed" to attract clicks from the keywords "graphic design portfolio" and "graphic designer inspiration" keywords.
This is where selling these types of digital products would come in handy as you can link your various products in the blog post. If you do not have a blog, another idea would be to create a how-to YouTube tutorial where you show your potential buyers how to use one of your templates.
Yes, Pinterest is a great tool to send traffic to YouTube as well, and your helpful YouTube video will help your community in their journey to being ready to buy from you or work with you.
Low Volume but High Intent Keywords
Less traffic? Could be. But these keywords often attract buyers or followers who know exactly what they want. When I create Pinterest strategies for my clients, I use a mix of keywords with different search volumes; it's more about the fit vs the number of searches. I also use very specific search phrases we find on Pinterest and as many long-tail keywords as possible.
Use these if you:
Sell custom illustrations, art prints, or wedding invitations
Want to position yourself as an education or thought leader for these topics
Are testing new products or services

Market gap tip
The keyword "editorial design" shows there's interest, but it's underutilized based on the results I see come up in my Pinterest search. Consider offering editorial templates or breakdowns of your magazine work. As more and more people look at selling templates or even creating their own digital magazine, I can see this keyword picking up momentum.
This is great for graphic designers who focus on digital magazines or even those who used to work in editorial and are currently starting their graphic design business.
Photoshop-Related Keywords
These keywords are perfect for anyone who sells presets, tutorials, or design tools. If you also have a YouTube channel where you share a lot of Photoshop tips and use YouTube as your funnel to sell courses or even services, using these keywords on your pins can help drive traffic to your YouTube channel.

How to Use This Keyword List to Identify Market Gaps
If you want to get ahead, don't just look at the keywords with the highest volume. Instead:
Look for low-to-mid volume keywords with less competition (like "editorial design" or "package design creative").
Pair specific keywords with trending design styles in your niche.
Use keywords to inspire freebies, lead magnets, or carousel pins that show off your skill set and attract engaged users.
When you enter the keywords in the Pinterest search bar, see what comes up. Do you find that there is a lack of content, a lack of specific content, or maybe you don't see any blog content that would help potential buyers in their journey? That's a great way to identify a market gap.
