11 things that you need to start doing on Pinterest in 2021 & 2022

If your business is not leveraging Pinterest yet, you are missing out. I have yet to come across an industry, a product or service that could not leverage Pinterest to grow their business.

With a good strategy, Pinterest can become an integral part of your marketing strategy and play a vital role in driving leads and traffic to your website.

Here are 11 things you need to start doing on Pinterest in 2021 & 2022

Sharing New Pins On a Consistent Basis

Even though Pinterest is a visual search engine, this doesn't mean that you shouldn't be sharing fresh content. Pinterest loves new links & new content. Make it a habit to share new content on a regular basis, and if you don't have new blogs, try driving traffic to other places such as your YouTube channel, meeting booking link or even Instagram account.

Creating Video & Idea Pins

As you've likely noticed, video marketing is dominating, that's not going to change, and Pinterest is no different. Creating videos for Pinterest is still in its infancy, and there is a huge opportunity for organic traffic and reach. According to Pinterest, there are about 1 Billion video views each day on Pinterest…but the competition is likely much lower than other platforms. Idea pins also allow you to share up to 20 slides of information, now that’s a great way to make an impact to your audience.

Reviewing Your Board Descriptions and Set-Up

Board descriptions should be optimized and reviewed on a regular basis, in fact, when you optimize your Pinterest account, you can't simply wash your hands and walk away. Trending keywords change, and Pinterest is always enhancing functionalities to make our lives easier.

Make it a habit to review your boards and to ensure that you are leveraging all of the board features available to you and that your descriptions are still relevant.

Claiming Your YouTube and Instagram Accounts

If you use Instagram and YouTube, did you know that you could leverage Pinterest to grow your audiences on those platforms as well? By claiming your accounts, you'll be able to get valuable insights of content shared from those claimed accounts as well—an important step not to miss.

Repurposing Videos From Other Platforms

Although Pinterest loves original content, you can also repurpose content when applicable. Easily repurpose Instagram stories or Reels on Pinterest.

If you also share video content on Facebook and LinkedIn, why not give your videos a try on Pinterest? You may want to make some adjustments, but it's worth exploring.

Create Multiple Graphics for Each of Your Links/Posts

It's been loud and clear that Pinterest likes fresh content. This doesn't mean that you can't share the same piece of content more than once; in fact, sharing your content on a regular basis is a great strategy....as long as you aren't spammy.

What I recommend doing is creating 5-7 graphics for each of your blogs, products or videos and sharing them to various relevant boards every 7-15 days. By doing this, you’ll be able to see which graphics resonate the best with your audience. A/B testing isn’t just for paid content, it’s also for organic content.

Schedule & Share Content Directly on Pinterest

You do not need a scheduler to have success with Pinterest, in fact, you should be sharing content directly on the platform. You should also schedule content natively inside the platform.

If you are looking for a scheduler, Later.com and the Tailwind App are both great options. I love Later because it is intuitive, and the communities available with the Tailwind App are great as well.

The time of the year matters.

I may sound like a broken record...but Pinterest is a search engine. If you want to drive ORGANIC traffic to seasonal content, you need to start scheduling and incorporating sharing this content well in advance of their perspective season.

For example, if an e-commerce client wants to drive traffic to back-to-school blogs and products, for their organic content, I will start working on this content and sharing it 3-4 months before the back-to-school season for paid content also well in advance. The important takeaway here is to remember to consider the season and seasonal promotions if that applies for your business.

Another thing to consider is that it may take more time for a brand new account vs. an account that has been established for some time.

Using Idea Pins

Idea pins are your opportunity to share ideas with up to 20 pages of images and text or video content.

Idea pins are a great way to take your audience on a journey to learn more about your products and services, given the capability and amount of content permitted.

You can also add overlay text, tags & save them to relevant boards. Your strategy should be educational, and your Idea Pin should follow the order of enticing your audience, educating them and presenting your offer.

If you are planning on using Idea Pins or are already creating them, ensure that you also create Idea Pins on mobile from time to time. There are more features such as voice-over audio & music when using the mobile app.

Consider Creating a Video Profile Cover

Is it time to update your profile cover? At the very least, it should be a board that represents your business and content. If you have a Pinterest for business account, and you have claimed your website or other sources, you can upload a video for your profile cover. Here's a big tip here, make sure that your video has captions if you have specific information to share. A video profile cover is your opportunity to give your audience a stellar fist impression and let them know exactly what you do and how you can help.

Collaborate With Other Industry Leaders

When it comes to growth, regardless of if we're talking about Pinterest, business, education, or anything else...collaboration is key. Make it a habit to collaborate with other industry leaders on Pinterest.

Join or invite other industry leaders to join your group boards, promote your joint-ventures, share video interviews, share educational content from others in your industry or industries that complement your own.

If you think about collaboration before competition, you've got the right mindset to grow and establish yourself on the platform.

I often see business owners scared to share content from competitors, and I can tell you from past experiences that sharing curated content is an important part of your strategy and will not prevent you from generating traffic leads and sales.
