How to search For Pinterest keywords
In this article:
Whether you're planning your next blog post, creating a digital product, or growing your email list, Pinterest keywords are what people enter on Pinterest to find information, products, and services they are looking for.
If you've ever wondered how to search Pinterest keywords effectively without wasting time, you're not alone.
Pinterest is a visual search engine and this means your success starts with what people are actually searching for.
Ready to take some notes and do some homework? I'm about to share how to search for Pinterest keywords.
What Are Pinterest Keywords, Exactly?
Pinterest keywords are the words and phrases Pinterest users type into the search bar when they're looking for something. These keywords help Pinterest understand your content and show it to the right people.
Think of keywords like small hints that tell Pinterest: "Hey! This Pin is about DIY home decor!" or "This one is perfect for wedding planning ideas!"
Using the right keywords helps your Pins show up in search results, improves your content's reach, and ultimately drives more traffic to your website, blog, or offers.
Where to Search Pinterest Keywords For Free
If you're doing your own research, Pinterest's native tools are a great place to start. They are easy to use and I always tell my clients that Pinterest wants you to succeed, they have so many tools and resources you can use.
Here are some of them
1. Pinterest Search Bar (& Predictive Text)
Start typing a word or topic into the Pinterest search bar. Pinterest will automatically suggest phrases based on what people commonly search for.
Example: Type "mid-century mod" and you'll see how Pinterest will start to suggest keywords and search phrases for that topic.
2. Pinterest Trends Tool
Pinterest Trends (available at trends.pinterest.com) shows you what's trending on the platform, and you can get a glimpse of how that keyword trends over a period of time.
You can compare keyword popularity and see when interest spikes throughout the year. It's especially helpful for seasonal content or to generally see how a keyword does year-over-year.
Example: If you're creating a fall product, you can look up when "fall aesthetic" or "pumpkin recipes" start trending and post accordingly.
3. Explore Related Searches
After you enter your keyword in the search bar, hit enter. Then, scroll down to the related searches section under each image. Pinterest often highlights other relevant keywords the platform associates with that content.
These can spark new ideas or help you niche down your topic even further.
4. Use the Keyword Tool in the Ads Dashboard
In the Pinterest ads dashboard, you can find the Pinterest keyword tool. This tool is great because it gives you monthly search volumes, which can give you clues as to topic and product demand on the platform.
5. Using Guided Search
Another popular way to do Pinterest keyword research is to enter a keyword in the Pinterest search bar, and once you hit enter, you will see colored keywords at the top, and if you click on each of them, it will give you a slightly different version of your keyword.
This is Pinterest telling you what people are searching for. When doing keyword research for clients, I go through all the options to find as many relevant keywords as possible.
How to Know Which Pinterest Keywords to Use
Once you have a list of keyword ideas, how do you know which ones are worth using?
Here's what to consider
Is this keyword actually connected to your content or offer? Relevance matters.
Long-tail keywords like "meal prep ideas for busy moms" are more powerful than generic ones like "meal prep." This is where specificity comes in.
While Pinterest doesn't show exact search volume except for the keyword tool in the ads dashboard, keywords that show up in suggestions or trends usually have strong search activity.
Look at how many Pins show up for a keyword. If it's super-saturated, you might want to get even more specific.

You've got your keywords; now it's time to optimize your content and profile with them.
Here's where it helps to add your keywords:
In your Pinterest Pin titles
In your Pinterest Pin descriptions
Your board names
Your board descriptions
Profile about section
Text-overlay on your graphics and videos
Your URL...bonus points if your URLs have a really relevant keyword in them.
The key is to write naturally and add keywords where it makes sense. Adding too many keywords and keyword stuffing will never work in your favor. I've seen too many accounts add a bunch of keywords, all separated by commas, and all that does is leave your audience confused.
It's one thing to get discovered and another thing to get people to engage with your content; the experience you create always matters.
